Employee wellbeing – The financial, ethical and legal impact
Even if improved employee wellbeing had zero effect on productivity, profitability and attendance, looking after employees is still the right thing to do.
A commitment to creating a healthier and happier environment should be the aim of any ethical employer. By creating the conditions for employees to thrive, work becomes a more pleasurable and fulfilling experience for everyone.
Ethical behaviour within a business can refer to a myriad of moral principles, rules and standards. It should include a commitment to diversity and inclusion, an active CSR programme, environmentally sustainable policies, and transparency. Employee wellbeing is also at the heart of ethical business. This can include policies to encourage healthy lifestyles and an awareness of mental health issues.
An ethical business will act to reduce stress levels and excessive work pressure, as well as ensuring people take proper breaks and use their annual leave allocation. It will also listen to its employees, and ensure their needs are properly met. Being unethical is no longer an option for businesses. With the advent of social media there really is no hiding place. As investor and entrepreneur Warren Buffett, the fourth wealthiest man in the world, once said: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.”
