What are Mental Health First Aiders?

The idea of a mental health champion (or first-aider) has grown in popularity in recent years and reinforces the message that mental health is as important as physical health.  There are several courses available for staff to train as a mental health first aider, with providers including St John’s Ambulance and MHFA (Mental Health First Aid England).  According to St John’s, the role of a mental health first aider is to support employees in the workplace who are experiencing mental ill health or distress. This support can vary from having a non-judgmental conversation with a colleague, through to guiding them towards the right help.

Their course teaches people to:

  • Be able to recognise the early signs and symptoms of common workplace mental health illnesses
  • Have the necessary skills to have a supportive, non-judgmental conversation with those who need it
  • Possess the knowledge and confidence to guide colleagues to the appropriate professional support if they require it
  • Promote greater awareness of mental health in the workplace and reducing stigma.

A holistic approach to wellbeing means that employers do their best to ensure their employees are healthy and happy.  The old approach to employee wellbeing is too little, too late – waiting until someone nears an exhausted breakdown before action is taken.  Business leaders and HR professionals realise that the future of employee wellbeing is about listening to and engaging with people. It is about taking an interest and acting on people’s needs.
